Ahmedabad Dairies from NID to Streets of Gujarat

Jul 5, 2025

After my first blog in April, it took me two months to write the next one on the Ahmedabad experience.

Ahmedabad was my first destination in North India. I landed at the airport and headed to the Tree Capital of India, Gandhinagar, on March 21, where NID-G is located. I was lucky to get the best hotel at the best price they also had an amazing restaurant. I’d suggest you stay there and try their food.

The next day was my Studio Test at NID Gandhinagar. We’ll talk about that in an upcoming blog.

After completing the studio test, I found out that I was scheduled for the first batch on the first day of interviews something that felt very disappointing and unlucky at the time.

Anyway, after the interview, I had no time to waste. I headed straight to the metro, going all the way to the last station Motera Stadium near Ahmedabad. I struggled a bit with the language barrier, but people were kind enough to repeat themselves and guide me. I met two Tamil IT professionals in the metro. Later, I roamed around Sector-16 in Gandhinagar, where every shop has chairs outside for people to sit and chat. I bought a kulfi and walked back to my hotel. On the way, a group of children ran toward me, eyeing the kulfi. I gave it to them, and they went away smiling.

The next day, I spent the whole day in my room preparing for the interview.

Interview Day:

I was so scared because I’m on the first day and first slot :(

While waiting, I made friends with a Malayali architecture student. His portfolio is absolutely insane 😭.

After the interview, I immediately went out to explore Ahmedabad. The cab drivers were calm and friendly, and fares were way cheaper compared to South India.

I visited Sarkhej Roza, a mosque and tomb built in 1451. The architecture was intricate, but sadly the place wasn’t well maintained.

Next, I hit the Sabarmati Riverfront, Flower Park, and Atal Setu Bridge, all beautiful. Took a cycle ride there and spent an hour just vibing.

The next best part is Law Garden Market. Gujarati ethnic wear and ornaments were everywhere, and it was so lively. I also visited Law Garden Park and finally ended the day with a visit to the famous Swati Sweets, where I had their popular Panki Chutney and Mango Ice Cream.

Final Day:

Like I said earlier, I made a friend while waiting at NID. We planned to meet again and explore Ahmedabad. Our first stop Adalaj Stepwell absolutely fascinating. Built in 1499 with sandstone, it had mesmerizing architecture. I spent over an hour there.

The next stop is Bhadra Fort, right in the middle of the bustling city streets. We walked around, explored the local life, and ended the day at a famous Iranian Restaurant. There, we had authentic Butter Chicken and Muska Bun with cream. It was delicious. We had deep conversations and ended up forming a great connection.

With a heavy heart, I waved goodbye to him and left for the airport to catch my flight to Hyderabad.

What I Observed:
  • Gujarati people are incredibly kind.

  • The prices, travel fares, and overall cost of living are super low!

  • Highly recommend visiting Ahmedabad & I’ll be going again for sure.
